Or is the base so far North, you don't see that many bears? Do they just use M-16's?|||A-10 Thunderbolt with GAU-8 Avenger, JOKING, no seriously i doubt they harm the bears, they probably just get in a HUMVEE and chase them off the Instillation, a lot like herding the bear off the instillation, with a HUMVEE.|||Polar bears are a nuisance just about anywhere in Alaska in close proximity to the ice flows. They wander in looking for an easy meal and will scavenge any food they come upon.
I recall a recent case where the authorities had to put a bear down and used an M16 to do it. I believe it took most of a 20 round magazine to do the critter in.
Professional hunters recommend at least a .338 to reliably put down a large bear such as grizzly or polar and I know the Marlin guide lever action in .45-70 has become quite popular amongst the pro guides. The point being you not only want to kill the bear, but also stop it before it can reach you which generally takes either a large slug or automatic fire.
