If I enlist in the USAF as Security Forces, can I get deployed to Thule Air Base?

And what is it like there? I'm guessing really cold, but what's there to do recreation wise?|||Hello Mike.

NO. You are not "deployed" to Thule Air Base in Greenland.

AF people need to stop calling everything "deployments."

You will be assigned to Thule Air Base as a permanent duty location for 12 months. Thule AB is remote duty. And, you will be given credit for pulling a "short overseas tour." You even get to wear the AF Short Tour Overseas Ribbon when you complete the tour.

Being assigned to Thule AB is not a deployment. A deployment for the AF is when you are sent to a place like the current Middle East combat zones for a period of 6 months and are "usually" subject to return on deployment between 12 - 18 months in the future.

However, as the US downplays their role in the Middle East AF deployments will become fewer and fewer.

Yes, it is cold at Thule AB. And there is little to do. See the photo.

You probably will have movies, some small hobby shops, a gym, maybe a 2 lane bowling alley, books to read, etc. No women. No town to visit. Only about 600 US and Danish contractors.

"A delegation from NATO's Parliamentary Assembly visited Thule in early September 2010 and were told by the base commander that, at that time (summer), approximately 600 personnel were serving at Thule, a mix of mostly U.S. and Danish active duty personnel and contractors.[16]

There is only a brief period each year in the summer when sea ice thins sufficiently to send supply ships to the base. The US sends one heavy supply ship each summer in what is called Operation Pacer Goose."

There won't be many AF cops assigned to Thule AB. However, if you wish to volunteer to be remote-isolated for 12 months then volunteer. You will prevent someone else from being assigned instead.

Best wishes,

First Sergeant|||It is boring. I've been remote to Alaska. Thule AB is similar.

|||You can put it in your dream sheet. That doesn't mean you'll get it though, you'll go where the air force needs you. And Alex, go to hell you poser. You aren't even in the god damn dep and your going to say your a navy seal? That is just plain disgraceful. You have no honor.|||It didn't work like that for me in the navy. I enlisted and despite my rate I got sent where they needed me. But when I got into the seals we were usually stationed on subs or sub bases.
